Bagels: The Massive Undertaking

I’ve never really been a cook.  Well, I’ve been known for burning things and creating smoke and on few occasions, setting small fires.  But it was a very small fire and my friend, who had much clearer thinking than me, put it out with the fire extinguisher.  In the future, pay attention to pita chips under the broiler!

So, recently, I’ve been playing more in the kitchen.  And I’m getting pretty good at the food making.  Well, Chris likes it!   And on occasion, I will super stretch myself.  It’s the Smitten Kitchen and I Shot The Chef… they make everything look so delicious.  And the photography is BEAUTIFUL!  So I think to myself, "Self, you can totally make that!"  Sometimes I take on a lot.  Sometimes, more than I can chew.  But most of the time, it works pretty well and I am impressed with myself.

Then I got an email from Smitten Kitchen.  She made BAGELS!  Seriously, I didn’t even know that you could make bagels!  They seem like something that would need a super special machine.  Or ingredients.  Or something that the average person just couldn’t handle.  Turns out I was wrong!  They’re surprisingly easy, albeit time consuming.  And they are delicious.

I had planned to share them with lots of people, but we ate them.  All of them.  I believe it was 18 in total.  Likely too many bagels for two people to eat in a span of 4 days.

I’m not going to lie, I was pretty impressed with myself!

    Mmmmm…I highly recommend making these: http://smittenkitchen.com/2008/11/leites-connusmate-chocolate-chip-coo kie/

Follow the recipe exactly…I got flat Ghiradelli chocolate chips from World Market. Definitely let the dough rest in the fridge for a day. Don’t forget the salt. And get ready for your heart to almost freakin’ STOP, they are so good. You won’t wait to share them with your friends, but if you do, they will think you’re a certified Baked Goods Goddess.
